Bidayuh student crowned Borneo’s most beautiful

KUCHING: Student Livonia Ricky beat 17 other finalists to be crowned the inaugural Miss Borneo Beautiful 2009.

The 18-year-old Bidayuh lass, who won RM5,000 and a scholarship for the executive diploma programme in hospitality and tourism at UCSI University Sarawak Campus, was thrilled with her victory as she had not expected to win.

“I’m very surprised, very excited and very happy. This is just unbelievable,” she said on Monday night after receiving her crown and sash from pageant organiser Alaric Soh.

Livonia also won the Miss Talent subsidiary title for her rendition of This is Me from the movie Camp Rock.

First runner-up was Darcia Marcely, 20, from Miri while 18-year-old Cornellia Johnek from Sri Aman was second runner-up. They won RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.

Other subsidiary title winners were Annabella Wee (Miss Friendship), Anglia Hendry (Miss Photogenic), Jennifer Denis (Miss Goodwill) and Juliedawati Junaidi (Miss Personality).

Meanwhile, Soh said he planned to continue organising the pageant next year as the response had been encouraging.

“I received over 140 applications and 89 turned up for the selection. Despite the bumpy take-off, everything went smoothly,” he said, referring to objections from Dayak women groups and political parties to the pageant’s original name of Miss Dayak Sarawak.

The women’s groups had questioned the choice of a racial group for the beauty contest.

The pageant was then renamed Miss Borneo Beautiful.
